House Lockout in Daly City

In most cities the front door is the door. On the streets laid out across Westlake between 1948 and 1962 it is not. The plan puts a single-car garage at pavement level, the living floor half a flight above it, and the front door at the top of an outside stair. The car goes into the garage, the people go through the door inside the garage, and the outside steps are for guests and for deliveries. So the low door takes every arrival, every departure and the last turn of the key at night, and it is the door people are standing at when they call.

Because the plan repeats street after street, most of what a technician needs to know is settled before the van moves. The hardware sits at the same height, in the same prep, on the same kind of jamb, from St. Francis Heights down to the flat blocks off John Daly Blvd. What changes is what has happened to the door since. A bolt added in the seventies. A builder cylinder still in the wood after sixty-odd winters of salt air. That second route matters here more than it does elsewhere, because the downstairs unit and the house above it are often two separate homes with two separate keys, and a tenant does not need the owner upstairs woken up to be let back into the place they pay for. Changing hardware afterward is the other question and that one needs the owner.

Between 8pm and midnight that $129 door is quoted as $179, and between midnight and 7am as $219, both worked out while you are still on the phone. The average run is 18 minutes, about 12 into Westlake and closer to 26 out toward Bayshore.
